Media Release
September, 2009
HOCKEY CANADA LAUNCHES RESPECT IN SPORT PROGRAM
The prevention of abuse, bullying and harassment has been at the forefront of Hockey Canada’s risk management strategies since 1997 when the Speak Out program was introduced for all Canadian hockey coaches. To further that commitment and to make it easier and more effective to receive this required education, Hockey Canada has launched Respect in Sport, an e-learning program for coaches, managers, assistant coaches and any adult with a supervisory role over youth involved in hockey.
“We want to stay current with delivery methodologies to keep training simple and consistent for our thousands of volunteers across the country,” said Paul Carson, Director of Development with Hockey Canada.”Respect in Sport allows us to do that with their proven, established e-learning platform.”
Respect in Sport is a grassroots online program that helps sport organizations deliver on their commitment to create a safer environment for all participants. As a delivery partner of the Canadian Red Cross and using their internationally acclaimed RespectED curriculum, Respect in Sport provides an engaging internet-based training tool that promotes respect and helps prevent abuse, bullying and harassment. Through this education, coaches are better equipped to help youth build self-esteem, learn the value of participating in sport and, most importantly, have fun.
"Coaches, managers and assistant coaches are at the forefront of our delivery system," said Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson. "Through Respect in Sport, we further our commitment to developing the best hockey leaders possible.”
While Hockey Canada’s Speak Out program may continue to be offered in some parts of Canada, Respect in Sport will also be offered through Hockey Canada branches. The two-and-a-half-hour online course can be taken at the coach’s leisure and is available in both English and French.
Respect in Sport is a program offered by Respect Group Inc., Canada’s leader in on-line abuse prevention programming for sport, schools and corporations. Visit them at www.respectgroupinc.com.
